Hike plans to take the voice calling route in India with help from Zip Phone
We have been hearing the news that WhatsApp is planning to bring in VOIP calls on the app pretty soon. However, it is not the only messaging app that is excited about offering free calls.
India's only homegrown instant messaging service Hike messenger too on January 8 announced its first acquisition of a US-based free voice-calling company--Zip Phone. With this acquisition, Hike, which was launched globally in December 2012, is aiming to expand its product range by venturing in the Internet-based communication space.
"We've strongly believed that through communication, we can bring India online," said Kavin Bharti Mittal, founder and CEO, Hike messenger.
Further providing hints about the expansion plan, the son of Bharti Enterprises chairman Sunil Mittal said, "With the acquisition we take one more step towards that mission. Zip Phone's technology will allow us to bring free voice calling to the market much faster."
Anuj Jain, who is the founder of Zip Phone, said, "As a start-up enthusiast, I had been keeping a close eye on hike and its developments and I am excited to now be a part of Hike."
